836 Plastic Bottles: A Water-Shed Moment

A documentary featuring the Weissport Canal.

In December 2009, during the last several weeks of my VISTA Watershed Remediation Service in Northeast Pennsylvania, I endeavored to complete a personal project. I had an idea which I had been mulling over in my head for a couple of years. And over time the concept managed to grow and coalesce, eventually becoming a manifest symbol of my philosophical contention that corporate privatization of water is fundamentally wrong. My ultimate purpose was to produce a short educational video to bring about greater awareness of a burgeoning environmental concern: too many plastic bottles created by unconscionable bottled-water companies. The eventual result is a ten minute documentary on YouTube illustrating the staggering amount of plastic water bottles in the world and why this waste problem seems only to be getting worse. Many thanks to Sean Boyd, my videographer, without whose persistence and resourcefulness I could not have completed this project. And Duane Dellecker, Director of the Carbon County Solid Waste & Recycling Center, who gave me free reign to dumpster-dive.
